The North Star and the Heart-Centered Leader
Leadership today is shifting. We’re moving away from titles and control, and toward authenticity, empathy, and service. The kind of leadership that transforms lives doesn’t bark orders — it guides from within.
Let me share a poem I wrote recently while reflecting on this sacred calling:
📝 Follow the North Star
By Fanus du Plooy
When night falls deep and maps are torn,
When winds of doubt leave dreams forlorn,
Lift up your gaze, both near and far—
And chart your course by your North Star.
Not loud with boasts or golden flare,
But steady, still, and always there.
A whisper in your soul’s own voice:
“Lead not for fame, but from your choice.”
True leaders do not walk ahead
With crowns of pride upon their head—
They walk beside, they lift, they see,
They ask: “Who might I help to be?”
They build the road with calloused hands,
Yet see beyond the shifting sands.
They plant in fields they may not reap,
They guard the dreams their people keep.
The North Star does not chase applause.
It shines because it knows its cause.
It doesn’t move to prove its worth—
It anchors hope upon the earth.
When shadows stretch and light grows thin,
A leader looks not out, but in.
They lead with heart, with open scars,
Still keeping course by their North Star.
So pause—breathe deep—don’t rush the way,
Each dawn will birth a wiser day.
And when you feel like you're adrift,
That guiding light will never shift.
Your star is truth. Your star is grace.
It’s courage when the world’s a race.
It’s holding fast when all seems lost—
The kind of faith that pays the cost.
So lead with love, not just command.
Lead with your soul, not just your hand.
The path is long, the seas are far…
But you were born to be a star.
🔎 Leadership Nuggets Woven into the Poem
The poem carries quiet but powerful truths — truths that I’ve seen come alive in the lives of the clients I coach, especially those who run small businesses or lead teams during uncertain times.
Here are a few takeaways that might speak to your own leadership journey:
1. Lead from Within
Your greatest leadership tool isn’t your skillset or status — it’s your inner alignment.
When you’re centered, you become a calm presence in chaos.
Ask yourself: What truth am I being asked to embody today?
2. Empower, Don’t Command
True leaders don’t shine so others go blind. They shine so others remember their own light.
“They ask: ‘Who might I help to be?’”
Coaching Tip: In your next conversation with a team member, replace correction with curiosity. Ask, “What support do you need to do your best work?”
3. Serve Quietly, Lead Boldly
The North Star doesn’t move to prove its place. It just holds its space in the sky — and that’s enough.
Leadership doesn’t require fanfare. It requires faithfulness.
Just because it feels quiet doesn’t mean it’s not powerful.
4. Be the Anchor When Others Drift
Life gets messy. Plans fall apart. But if you’re grounded in something deeper — a mission, a value, a belief — you become a lighthouse for others.
“The kind of faith that pays the cost.”
In difficult seasons, your consistency becomes a comfort.
5. Heart-Centered Leadership is the Way Forward
As I often tell my clients: Head-based leadership solves problems. Heart-based leadership transforms people.
You don’t have to choose between being strong and being soft. Heart-centered leadership is the marriage of both — the courage to care and the wisdom to act.
🌱 A Reflection for You
Take a quiet moment today. Sit with these three questions:
-
What is my North Star in leadership right now? (Is it integrity? Service? Vision?)
-
Where am I leading from — fear, or love?
-
Who might need my steady light today?
Because leadership, in the end, is not about being ahead of the crowd.
It’s about being a guiding presence — rooted in purpose, shaped by service, and radiant with grace.
✨ Final Words
Dear reader, whether you’re leading a business, a team, a family, or simply leading yourself through change — remember this:
You were born to be a star.
Not to dazzle. But to guide.
Lead with your heart.
And let the North Star within you show the way.
From my heart to yours, with love,
